3CR Tuesday Breakfast Show Tuesday March 17
  • played my recording of the talk delivered last Wednesday night by Jeff Halper, an Israeli activist, professor of anthropology, and coordinator of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. Last year, Jeff Halper was the only Israeli on the Free Gaza ships that broke the Israeli blockade of Gaza to deliver supplies. His most recent book is An Israeli in Palestine: Resisting Occupation, Redeeming Israel. He spoke at Melbourne University as a guest of Australians For Palestine and Women For Palestine. I edited his talk down to three parts for broadcast: in Part1, he spoke about Israeli politics and how the occupation is (not) discussed in Israeli public discourse; in Part 2, he spoke about Israel creating conditions on the ground that foreclose the possibility of a viable Palestinian state; and in Part 3, he went into detail about the "matrix of control" Israel is implementing in the West Bank - settlement blocks, house demolitions, and the separation wall - and how it impacts on Palestinian life/inflicts wounds both mortal and symbolic.
  • Rachel was joined in the studio by Maloti Ray from the Melbourne University Graduate Students Association to talk about their 'Fair Fares' campaign, to make international and postgraduate students eligible for concession fares on public transport. For more about the campaign and to sign the petition, go here.
